Biography
Nihal Apaydin was born in Ankara, Turkey. She was graduated from “Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine” in 2000. She started her medical proficiency in “Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anatomy” in June 2002 and held her specialist in medicine degree in February 2005 with the thesis entitled “The macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the gastroesophageal region and its clinical importance.” She had granted by Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Agency (TUBITAK) and spent a year at the St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies, as a visiting scientist in 2007-2008. She was appointed as a Visiting Professor in the same University for contributing teaching and research activities after 2009. She was promoted as an “Associate Professor of Anatomy” in 2010 and “Professor of Anatomy” in 2015. Meanwhile, she completed her second phD in Neuroscience in 2015 with the thesis entitled “Evaluation of relation between time perception and reward processing in the brain with fMRI in patients with major depressive disorder”. She has more than 80 international publications in medical journals cited by SCI, more than 10 book chapters and more than 100 national and international presentations in scientific meetings and 3 national scientific awards. She is associate editor of peripheral nervous system section of “Surgical and Radiological Anatomy” since 2009 and editor in chief of the "Anatomy" which is the official journal of Turkish Society of Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy. She is a member of Editorial Board of “Clinical Anatomy” since 2009 and of “Anatomy Research International” since 2011 and currently serving as an Editorial Board member in many other International Journals. She was the General Secretary of 4th ISCAA which was organized in Ankara in 2012 and General Secretary of Neuroscience Congress which was again organized in Ankara in 2016. She served as the treasurer member of Executive Committee of Turkish Society of Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy between 2014-2018. She served as vice president at Ankara University Brain Research Center between 2015-2019 and as head of the Department of Neuroscience between 2019-2022. While she was one of the Councilors of the European Association of Clinical Anatomy since 2015, she was elected as vice president of the association between 2023-2025 and president-elect between 2025-2027, thus becoming the first woman to be elected president in the history of the association. Prof. Apaydin worked and is currently working in various boards and commissions of Ankara University and serves as the coordinator of the English program at the Faculty of Medicine. Her special interests include clinical anatomy and neuroanatomy and; she continues to work especially on the peripheral nervous system, brain and neuroimaging (fMRI).
