Abstract

In this article, the thyroid functions are determined in 24 patients who have both surgical treatment and radiotherapy performed for laryngeal carcinoma. The thyroid gland radioactive iodine uptake decreased 50% in laryngectomized patients. This decrease reaches 64% in patients who received radiotherapy, but this is never a critical decline level in thyroid function where a thyroid hormone treatment is necessary. The functional reserve decrease is normal at the end of three months. The relief of the thyroid gland in patients under radiotherapy followed by laryngectomy is much slower. Pre and post treatment levels of thyroid function in all cases should be periodically established for the early diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism which may occur in laryngeal carcinoma.
