Özet

The tablets found at Kültepe during the 1988 excavation season in plan-square S-T/12-13 provide
detailed information about the commercial activities and family life of Ašššur-rē’ī and his son Pilah-
Ištar. After the death of Ašššur-rē’ī, Pilah-Ištar made great efforts to collect the debts of his father’s
firm. It also appears that Pilah-Ištar had severe problems with his brothers regarding the division of his
father’s inheritance. Aššur-rē’ī had three sons, Pilah-Ištar, Mannum-balum-Ašššur, and Šuzuzu, and
an unknown daughter. After the death of their father, the brothers had problems with how to find the
money for their sister’s marriage and what to give as wedding gifts. It is also known from the texts in the
archive that the brothers seized each other’s commercial goods and were sued. We learn from the tablets
that Pilah-Ištar was married twice and separated from both of his wives. After separating from his first
wife Tatana, he had to pay divorce money. After Tatana, he married another woman named Walawala.
According to a divorce document in the archive of another merchant, Pilah-Ištar later separated from
Walawala as well.
