Abstract

In order to search the effect of endoscopic therapy of esophageal varices on portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG), 40 patients with clinically and endoscopically proven portal hypertension were evaluated in this study. The first group consisted of 21 patients with esophageal varices not receiving endoscopic therapy. In the second group there were 19 patients whom esophageal varices were treated with sclerotherapy and/or banding ligation. Both groups were evaluated and classified endoscopically and histologically for PHG. PHG was found in 68.4% of patients whom esophageal varices were completely eradicated and 57.1% in the non-treatment group. There were no significant differences between the two groups (P>0.05). The results of this study shows that eradication of varices with endoscopy does not have any effect on the incidence of PHG.
