The characterization of oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions and their temporal and spatial variations in ancient marine environments is a difficult geochemical problem. We present first data on the oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions of the Early Holocene and late Late Pleistocene organogenic carbonates from the southern Sea of Marmara. Relationships between the oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions and their correlation with trace element contents in host sediments were studied. The concentrations of some trace elements (Mo, V, Co, Zn, Cr, Ni, Sc, and Ga) show a direct correlation with delta(13)C of carbonates and sedimentation temperature and a negative correlation with delta(18)O of carbonates. The sediments of the southern Sea of Marmara usually contain little organic carbon, which varies with age and location. There is no correlation between the contents of organic carbon and trace elements in the sediments.
