Özet

Children may attribute different meanings to the medical terms used in hospital environment in different developmental age periods, and this may affect their adaptation with the hospital and treatment, thecommunication with the health personnel and further hospital experiences. This study was carried out with the purpose of determining children's perception of medical terms related to the developmental age periods. To our knowled there is no specific study carried out on children about this matter. Data was collected through interviews with 164 five to eighteen years old children hospitalized at the Department of Pediatrics of Ege University Hospital between December 2004 and March 2005. The meanings attributed by the children to the medical terms were grouped for evaluation with the figure, percentage and chi-square test by SPSS 13.0 package software. It was found that the thermometer and vial were the medical terms that were respectively most correctly known (86%) and mostly unknown (96,3), while the serum was the most wrongly known medical term (37.2%). The difference between ages, periods of hospitalization, acute or chronic diseases and the extent of knowledge on medical terms were found statistically significiant (p<0.05).
