Preliminary results on interspecific hybridization in Corylus

Özet

Seven Corylus species were crossed in all combinations to better understand the relationships among them and facilitate their possible use in breeding. Controlled crosses were made either on bagged branches or trees enclosed by wooden frames covered with plastic. For each species except C. americana at least two genotypes were used as female parents, while the pollen was collected from five genotypes and mixed. Percent cluster set was determined. Within the same species the average set was 32.3% but varied among genotypes. Reciprocal differences were common. The European hazelnut C. avellana gave fairly good set with C. colurna, C. americana and C. californica only when used as the pollen parent. The Asian species C. sieboldiana and C. heterophylla were not compatible with each other. Among the North American species C. cornuta and C. californica were highly cross compatible but both showed lower degree of compatibility with C. americana. On the other hand C. sieboldiana was closely related to C. cornuta and C. californica, as all crosses among these three species gave a high cluster set.
