It is difficult to discover novel agents that selectively kill tumor cells or inhibit their proliferation without general toxicity. In the field of chemotherapeutic drugs, the search for new, more active, more selevtive and less toxic compounds is stil very intense, and new promising anticancer approaches are being tested. Curcuma longa L. has been used long as a medicinal plant in traditional Chinese medicine. Its active constituent curcumin has anti-inflammatory, chemopreventive, anti-oxidant, anti-angiogenic, anti-tumorigenic and cytotoxic properties. There is a great interest in developing high affinity curcumin analogs as anticancer drugs. The goal of this study was to review of compounds that have been designed as curcumin analogs and search their effects against various cancer cell lines.
