Özet

This study offers a contribution to comparative onomastics. It deals with the motivations that influence German and Turkish parents when they go through the process of finding a first name for a newborn child. In the first part of the paper, these motivations -first those of German, then those of Turkish parents - are analyzed and illustrated with the help of examples. The last part of the study contains a summarizing comparison of the outlined motivations.
