Özet

Animal protein is a vital component of the human diet. In this regard, the livestock sector occupies a pivotal position in the global food supply. Conversely, animal husbandry represents a significant contributor to the feed, medicine, leather, textile, and other industries. The breeding of rabbits is a relatively labour-intensive process when compared to other forms of animal husbandry.  Additionally, it is a valuable source of both meat and wool. Rabbit meat is a rich source of protein and is relatively lean, containing low levels of saturated fatty acids and cholesterol. As the adverse effects of global climate change become increasingly apparent, there is a growing pressure on natural resources. In light of the considerable environmental impact associated with the high carbon and water footprint of the red meat sector, there is a growing opportunity for rabbit breeding to emerge as a significant contributor to the global food supply. The Ankara rabbit, which is an endemic species in our country, has been exported from Ankara Province and is now found in many countries worldwide. The primary objective of Ankara rabbit breeding is the production of wool. The wool produced by these rabbits is highly valued in the textile industry. Additionally, Ankara rabbits have a high feed conversion ratio. In the context of Ankara rabbit breeding, the provision of appropriate shelter conditions is of paramount importance with regard to the health, nutrition and wool quality of the animals. It is important to note that rabbits are highly sensitive to fluctuations in temperature within their shelter. It is essential that the temperature within the shelter is maintained within a suitable range for breeding purposes. Furthermore, the animals must be protected from any sudden fluctuations in temperature. Concurrently, the shelter should be provided with an adequate supply of fresh air and sufficient illumination. In the absence of windows, it is more straightforward to maintain the desired environmental conditions within the indoor space. It is recommended that Ankara rabbits be housed in individual cages from three to four months of age to ensure optimal wool quality and animal health. In this study, the design of poultry houses suitable for Ankara rabbits and their breeding will be emphasised. Keywords: Ankara rabbit, poultry house, design, rabbit wool, rabbit meat
