A Model Test On University Students' Career Adaptability

Purpose: Constructivist Career Theories, which emerged with the development of the postpositivism approach, emphasize individual career management and state that individuals should take responsibility for their career lives. The Career Construction Theory, one of these theories; It was developed by Savickas as a result of years of studies and has attracted a lot of attention in recent years.Savickas transformed his theory into a functional model for use in career counseling practices. The Career Construction Model of Adaptation consists of four stages: Being ready for career adaptation (adaptive readiness), career adaptation resources (adaptability resources), career adaptation response (adapting responses) and career adaptation results (adaptation results). This research aims to test The Career Construction Model of Adaptation in the scope of sampling in Turkey. To this end, direct and indirect relationships were devised between prerequisites of career adaptation (general self-efficacy, self-esteem, cognitive flexibility), and career adaptability (concern, control, curiosity, confidence) as well as career adaptation response (career choice status) and career adaptation result (academic satisfaction).

In line with the purpose of the research, answers to the following questions were sought:

1. Is there a positive and significant relationship between the variables of general self-efficacy, self-esteem and cognitive flexibility and career adaptability?

2. Is there a positive and significant relationship between general self-efficacy and career choice status?

3. Is there a positive and significant relationship between career adaptability, career choice status and academic satisfaction?

4. Is there a positive and significant relationship between career choice status and academic satisfaction?

5. Is there a mediating effect of general self-efficacy, career adaptability and career choice status?

Method: This study employed a correlational research model. The study group consisted of 485 students studying at the faculty of education, faculty of science and letters, faculty of economics and administrative sciences, faculty of engineering as well as faculty of veterinary medicine, Afyon Kocatepe University. The process of data gathering was conducted through instruments such as personal information form developed by the researcher herself, The Career Adaptability Scale, The General Self-efficacy Scale, Rosenberg‟s Self-esteem Scale and Cognitive Flexibility Inventory. The analysis of the research data was carried out by employing path analysis, a type of Structural Equation Modeling.

Findings: Path analysis results in the research revealed that the suggested adaptation model was proved successful and that the model adaptation values were at the perfect adaptation level. According to path analysis results, self-esteem and cognitive flexibility predicted general self-efficacy and career adaptability and general self-efficacy predicted career adaptability. By the same token, career adaptability entailed career choice status and career

choice status led to academic satisfaction. According to the path analysis results; self-esteem and cognitive flexibility entailed general self-efficacy which led to career adaptability and career choice status. Career adaptability and career choice status affected academic satisfaction. In addition to these results, a moderate relationship was discovered between cognitive flexibility and self-esteem.As a result of the research, it was revealed that all the variables in the model had positive and significant relationships with each other. Besides it was determined that three-quarters of the participants (75.1%) chose the program they studied voluntarily (career choice status) and 70.3% were satisfied with the program they studied (academic satisfaction).

Results: The results obtained in the study indicated that the assumption of The Career Construction Theory and The Career Construction Model of Adaptation were proved to be successful. Accordingly, The Career Construction Model of Adaptation is an appropriate model to explain the career configuration process of university students studying in Turkey.
