Özet

Objective: Obesity arises from a gap between the food in take and calory expenditure. It develops when the energy excess brings extra fat accumulation. "Its development is related to parame ters such as genetic, neurological, endocrinal, nutritional, socio-economic, psychological factors, gender and physical hypo-activity." There are differences in terms of features like cell size between subcutan and visceral fat tissue, membrane receptors, fat accumulating and fat acid secretion. This is why the measure of waist circumference (WC) is more significant for the diagnosis of obesity than body mass in dex (BMI) which indicates the general body weight gain. Obesity is also related with depression. In this study, the relationship between obesity, hypertension and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) points is explored. Material and Methods: In our study, to evaluate the relation between obesity and depression 112 male and 113 female subjects between the age of 35-60 are included in the survey. It is evaluated as abdominal obesity if waist circumference is ≥102 cm. in male and ≥ 88 cm in female subjects according to the criteria of NCEP ATP III- 2001. In the secriteria for WC, 105 subjects were normal and 120 subjects were over weight/obese; and for blood pressure values 117 subjects were normal and 108 subjects were hypertensive in 225 totally. Results: According to the criteria of waist circumference, BDI points and the blood pressure values are found higher in the obese subjects. These results are also found statistically meaningful (p<0,01 and p<0,05 respectively) compared to non-obese subjects. Acccording to the criteria of BMI, BDI points are not found high and meaningful in the obese subjects (p>0,05) compared to non-obese subjects. Conclusion: It must be performed more studies in this field. Copyright © 2012 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
