The main objective of this study is to apply Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) to an openloop unstable continuous stirred tank reactor. The GPC provides a substantial array of tuning knobs, viz: N-1, N-2, NU and lambda. The values of NU and lambda are varied in order to obtain the best result. The success of the various control action is estimated using the integral square of the error (ISE) and the integral of absolute value of error (IAE) criterions. The reactor is simulated using the coupled material balance on the reactant A and energy balance. The model equations are solved by means of Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method. The controlled variable is temperature of the reaction mixture. Imposed disturbance consists of setpoint change.
