In 217 cases the author investigated the activity of the G 6 FD enzyme in vaginal fluid from women with benign and malignant pelvic conditions and from normal healthy pregnant and nonpregnant women. In 92 patients with malignant gynecological lesions, G 6 FD enzyme activity was always positive and in all these cases, especially in cervical carcinomas, the activity was very high. A significant fall in enzyme activity was seen in cases retested after treatment. In the control group, 58 of the 125 patients (79.3%) showed negative enzyme activity. This group included normal healthy women, pregnant women and patients with nonspecific pelvic and vaginal infections, deviatio uteri etc. The activity was positive in a ratio of 20.6% but this very low ratio may not be worth considering. In cases of endometrial hyperplasia, uterine myoma, cervical polyp, erosions of the portio and vaginal infections due to Trichomonas vaginalis, the number of cases with a positive enzyme activity was high, but the enzyme activity is low compared with the carcinoma cases. After treatment in the control groups the activity fell to normal, in most cases. The results obtained are discussed and it is concluded that, together with the other methods, the investigation of G 6 FD enzyme activity in the vaginal fluid is helpful in diagnosis for elucidating the results of treatment in genital carcinomas.
