Özet

This study investigates the politics of knowledge production in Turkish human geography by analyzing power relations and contexts that shape the practice of the discipline. Drawing on a historical analysis of the formation of Turkish human geography and in-depth interviews with junior-level geographers, the study highlights three scales of power relations: global, national, and institutional. The global scale is characterized by the increased interest in Anglo-American critical human geographies, with Anglo-American geographies occupying a dominant position in the circulation of knowledge and ideas. The national context includes historical, cultural, and political factors that affect knowledge production and reception, with the authoritarian tendencies in the Turkish political realm having a significant impact on the production of critical analyses in human geography. The institutional/departmental scale is characterized by power struggles reflecting the broader political and economic forces that influence academic practices and determine which research topics are deemed important and legitimate. The study argues that Turkish geographers practicing critical geographies must navigate the tensions between global and local knowledge productions and between dominant and alternative forms of knowledge.
