Depression and life satisfaction in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy

Özet

Objective: This study was conducted with the purpose of determining the depression and life satisfaction levels of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Material and Methods: The study was carried on 101 patients receiving ambulatory, chemotherapy in the Chemotherapy and Hematology outpatient clinic in the Ataturk University Aziziye Research Hospital. The data were collected Using a questionnaire determining the socio-demographic features and medical status Of the patients. The Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Beck Depression Scale were used respectively to determine the life satisfaction level and the depression level of the patients. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, variance analyses, independent sample t test, and Pearson's correlation test. Results: The mean depression score was 16.0 +/- 8.3 and the mean life satisfaction score was 24.3 +/- 6.1. There was a significant negative correlation between depression and life satisfaction (r = -0.320, p < 0.01). The mean depression scores differed significantly with regard to the patients' career. The mean depression scores of patients who self-worked were higher than the scores of those who had official jobs. The mean values of life satisfaction scores displayed significant difference between groups regarding the marital Status (F = 3.985, p = 0.022). Conclusion: Cancer patients receiving chemotherapy have mild depression and their life satisfaction is medium level. In addition, a significant negative relationship is present between the depression and life satisfaction scores. Therefore, it is necessary for patients to receive adequate Support from health professionals and their families.
