Introduction and Aim:
Leisure time physical activity, which is seen as a tool that supports the physical, psychological, and sociological
development of individuals as well as understanding their leisure time motivations, is of great importance for
development of a healthy young generation. In this context, the aim of our study is to examine the relationship between
adolescent individuals’ participation motivation in recreational exercise and their mental well-being.
Method:
The sample group in the relational screening model consists of 657 high school students (mean age=16.41±0.65), with
385 males (59%) and 272 females (41%) selected via convenience sampling method. The ‘’Revised Exercise
Motivation Measure (REMM)’’ and the ‘’Warwick-Edinburg Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS)’’ were used to collect
data fort he study. After testing the basic assumptions of parametric tests, descriptive statistics in addition to t-test,
MANOVA, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis methods were employed in data analysis.
Findings:
The results of the MANOVA analysis indicate that the main effect of gender variable on the ‘’REMM’’ sub-dimensions
is significant (p<0.01). According to the t-test results, there is a statistically significant difference in the mean scores of
‘’WEMWBS’’ among participants in the gender variable (p<0.01). There is a statistically significant difference in the
mean scores of "REMM" in terms of the main effect of the frequency of participation in leisure time physical activity
(p<0.01). In addition, according to the ANOVA results for ’’WEMWBS’’, there is also a significant difference (p<0.01).
Accordingly, the mean scores of those who regularly participate in physical activity are higher than the others. The
mean scores of participats in ‘’REMM’’ and ‘’ WEMWBS’’ significantly differ according to the variable of physical, mental
and social health status (p<0.01). Finally, according to the results of the Pearson correlation analysis, a statistically
significant positive relationship is found between ‘’REMM’’ and ‘’WEMWBS’’ (p<0.01).
Conclusion:
In general, it can be stated that participation in recreational exercise motivates mental well-being in adolescent
individuals. In this context, directing adolescent individuals towards recreational physical activity in their leisure is
thought to be benefical for their mental well-being. In future studies, it is important to analyze the results obtained within
the scope of this research in depth by examining not only psychological and subjective well-being concepts, but also
longitudinal and qualitative studies.
