Introduction and Aim:
Although it is known that participation in yoga activities in leisure provides various psychological benefits, there are very limited
studies that present the relationships between these psychological benefits as a theoretical model and examine them in depth. In
this context, the aim of our study is to examine the serial mediation role of recreational flow experience, psychological resilience and
mental well-being in the effect of leisure involvement on life satisfaction from the perspective of flow theory according to the views
of yoga participants.
Method:
Exploratory sequential design, one of the mixed research methods, was used in the study. The quantitative sample group of the
study consisted of 303 female (77.3%) and 89 male (22.7%) yoga participants totaling 392 (Mage=33.16±8.80). In the study, ''A
Modified Involvement Scale (MIS)'', ''The Recreational Flow Experience Scale (RFES)'', '' The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS)'',
''Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS)'' and ''The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS)'' were used. After testing
the basic assumptions of parametric tests, Pearson correlation analysis and SPSS Process Macro (Model 6) were used to determine
the serial mediation effect. The qualitative sample group in the phenomenological design consists of 12 yoga participants, 9 women
and 3 men. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview form. Content analysis method was used to analyze the data
obtained.
Findings:
According to the results of Pearson correlation analysis conducted within the scope of the quantitative part of the study, a positive
correlation was found between the mean scores of MIS, RFES, BRS, WEMWBS and SWLS (p<0.01). According to the results of
the analysis, leisure involvement had a direct effect on life satisfaction (b= 0.216, 95% CI [0.1195 0.3141], t = 4.379, p<0.01). The
serial mediation effect of leisure involvement on life satisfaction was significant; therefore, it was seen that recreational flow
experience, psychological resilience and mental well-being had a serial mediation effect on the relationship between leisure
involvement and life satisfaction (b= 0.023, 95% CI [0.0093 0.0384]). In the qualitative part of the study, in accordance with the
theoretical framework, the themes of "The Whole of My Life", "Journey to Self-Discovery", "On the Path of Transformation" and
"Peace is Calm Courage" were emerged.
Conclusion:
It was concluded that psychological factors are important in the effect of leisure involvement on life satisfaction in terms of yoga
participants, and the theory subheadings that emerged in the qualitative section support this. This study may theoretically contribute
to the development of psychological factors of individuals' participation in yoga activity in leisure and may enable studies to be
conducted from different perspectives.
