Özet

Angiogenesis is essential for tumor growth and metastasis. Among many angiogenetic factors, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is known to be one of the most important, and is expressed at high levels by many tumors. However, still little is known about its behavior in the circulating level. We examined the influence of tumor stage on the circulating levels of VEGF in sera from breast cancer patients. Thirty women with breast cancer who were studied did not receive any prior therapy. The level of VEGF in serum was measured by using the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique before treatment. In patients with stage IV breast cancer there was a significant increase in VEGF levels compared to stage II disease. The present study suggests that large tumor burden was associated with significantly increased serum levels of VEGF.
