The use of animals as experimental subjects in the 20th century has made many important contributions to scientific and medical knowledge. The aim of this study is to present an overview of the ethical principles regarding the care of animals used in biomedical and behavioural research, teaching and testing; the basic objective is to provide information that will enhance animal well-being, the quality of biomedical research, and the advancement of biological knowledge that is relevant to humans or animals. The use of animals for research and teaching should always take into consideration ethical issues.
