Özet

Opopanax W.D.J. Koch genus is included in Apiaceae family. Species of this genus are

known with the names kirkorazar, kaymacık, kaymakotu and kırkısrak in our country and known as

Hercules’ all-heal throughout the world. The genus is distinguished with its compound basal

leaves, glabrous fruits, yellow flowers, tall stem with glochidate and stellate hairs. 4 species

are found in Opopanax genus throughout the world (O. chironium (L.) W.D.J.Koch, O.

hispidus Griseb, O persicus Boiss. & Heldr., O. siifolius (Boiss. & Heldr.) Menemen), and all

of them grow in our country naturally (1, 2).

In this study we have determined the total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of the

methanolic extracts prepared from the roots and aerial parts of each plant as gallic acid and

quercetin equivalents, and also carried out the antioxidant activities by DPPH and ABTS

radical scavenging assays individually.

As a result, we have found that both roots and aerial parts of O. chironium extract had the

highest total phenolic content (3,8884448 mg GAEs/g and 66,568967 mg GAEs/g extract,

respectively); the highest total flavonoid content was found in the aerial parts O. hispidus

(129,357339 mg KEs/g extract) and in the roots of O. chironium (108,352088 mg KEs/g

extract). In parallel to these results, ABTS radical scavenging activity results, extracts

prepared from both the roots and aerial parts of O. chironium had the highest activity with

132.2968±25.12282 mg trolox/g dry extract and 46.65710±2.10593 mg trolox/g dry extract,

respectively. As for the results of the DPPH radical scavenging activity study, root extract of

O. chironium was found to have the highest activity with an IC 50 value of 0.03551968 ±

0.01029904) and the aerial part extract of O. siifolius had the highest activity with an IC 50

value of 0.05300286 ± 0.01058159). We believe that the phenolic compounds that the plants

contain contribute to their antioxidant activities and have the potential to be used as

antioxidant agents.
