The questions "Is justification making true belief into knowledge?" and "Is certainty possible?" are two of the fundamental questions of epistemology. Chisholm answers these questions through the conceptualization "epistemic levels" and argues that knowledge has a gradual and hierarchic nature in terms of certainty. Al-Farabi argues that certain knowledge can be attained gradually and accepts tripartite knowledge definition including belief, truth and justification. Both philosophers gradate the kinds of knowledge in terms of certainty. In this article, the conditions of epistemological certainty will be examined by comparing the views of the two philosophers. The conditions of certainty rest on justification. Therefore, the way al-Farabi and Chisholm looked at the question of justification will also be examined. In conclusion, it will be set forth that the two philosophers have a common mentality of knowledge, though they hold different ideas concerning the other issues.
