A new sodium ion selective electrode has been developed based on 4-amino-benzo-15-crown-5 derivatives Of C-60 and C-70 fullerenes as the sensing material, dioctylphtalate (DOP) as the plasticizer and PVC as the matrix. This electrode shows a Nernstian response for sodium ions over the concentration range 1x10(-4)-1x10(-1) mol.1(-1) with a slope of 59,4 mV/pNa(+) and a detection limit of 5x10(-5)mol.1(-1). It has fast response time and can function for a period of at least 45 days without any considerable deviation in potentials. The proposed electrode exhibits comparatively good selectivities over a wide variety of other tested cations except potassium and ammonium and can be reliably used in the pH range of 3.5-8.0. The electrodes were tested for direct determination of sodium ion concentrations in some water samples and the results exhibited a good agreement with those obtained by ICP spectrophotometry.
