Özet

This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of ephedrine - a sympathomimetic agent - in prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Forty-five patients undergoing gynecologic laparoscopy under general anaesthesia were randomly divided into 3 groups. The patients received an intramuscular dose of either ephedrine (0.5 mg/kg), droperidol (0.04 mg/kg) or saline just before the end of surgery. The incidence of nausea was found to be less in both ephedrine group just after extubation (0 min) and late postoperative period (120-720 min). In the study period, the antiemetic effect of ephedrine was similar to that of droperidol and total antiemetic drug consumption of these groups was less than placebo group. There was not any sedative effect in all of the 3 groups while 20% patients were desorientated in ephedrine group. There was no blood pressure variations in 3 groups but pulse rate values remained statistically high in ephedrine group. From the results of this study, we conclude that ephedrine is effective as droperidol in prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting, but as it increases significantly pulse rate, it seems to be inappropriate in patients with cardiovascular system diseases.
