The use of omics approaches in forensic medicine & toxicology is
becoming increasingly widespread. Omics technologies play an important
role in analysing evidence, identifying suspects and victims, and
determining the cause of death in forensic investigations by studying
biological systems at the molecular level, including genomics,
transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics. Forensic medicine &
toxicology examine from a legal perspective the effects of endogenous
and exogenous substances on the human body and their possible
contribution to factors that may be associated with crime. The
integration of omics technologies into the forensic field offers the
potential for more comprehensive and accurate results, especially in
complex cases. These technologies are used in many areas, from the
identification of criminals to the determination of the cause of death.
Rapid developments in omics technologies and their increasing use are
expected to be used more widely and effectively in forensic
investigations. This chapter assesses the current status, potential
benefits, impacts and applicability of omics strategies in forensic
medicine and toxicology.
