Problem Statement: Mother tongue is an essential communication tool that creates the
strongest ties of the person with the society and helps the person develop an
individual personality as well as a social one. For this reason, mother tongue and
reading comprehension and writing skills that are the activity areas of mother tongue
are of crucial importance. However, it is a fact that mother tongue and teaching
mother tongue are not considered important enough and there is no sensitive
attachment to this issue in our country. One of the major reasons for our mother
tongue teaching being in this situation is that no literary texts which develop love of
language, linguistics consciousness and awareness in children and which reflect all
possibilities of the language are included in the settings of mother tongue teaching.
The thesis of “the problems regarding mother tongue teaching can be overcome in the
settings where Turkish language teaching is conducted by literary children’s books”
forms the problem of this research.
Objective / Research Question: In this study, the issue of the effect of literary children’s
books on reading comprehension and writing skills of 6th grade students is taken into
consideration. Therefore, an answer has been sought to the question of “Is there any
significant difference between success averages of the experimental group in which
Turkish teaching program is applied considering literary children’s books and control
group?”.
The method: “Pre-test and post-test control group experimental design” is used within
the research. The research is carried out on two groups which were randomly
assigned; one with experimental group and the other is control group. The data was
collected from the “the Test of Reading Comprehension and Writing Skills in Turkish”
and from “the Data Collection Instrument of Composition (Writing) Skills on the
subject of “What job are you considering for future? Why?”. In the research, t-test was
utilized in determining whether there is a significant difference between pre-test
results which can be considered as a measurement of learning in various levels of the
groups. In order to test the significance of the success difference of the groups on
various levels “two-way ANOVA for mixed measures” analysis is used.
Findings / Results: It was found out that the Turkish teaching programs in which
literary children’s books are used as basic instruments are more efficient (except
for“knowledge” levels) in providing students reading comprehension and writing
skills compared to traditional method.
