Özet

Objective: In this paper, we aimed to screen gynecological problems and cancers of elderly women, to make suggestions for gynecological screening programs and management of precancerous lesions or cancers in this age group. Material and Methods: We made a retrospective review of complaints, Papanicolaou (Pap) smear results, abdominal ultrasonography (AUSG), transvaginal ultrasonography (TVUSG) results and diagnoses of women over 65 years old who presented with non-spesific sypmtoms to the gynecology outpatient clinic from January 2007 to January 2011. Results: The number of patients over 65 years old were 1145 (3.6%) among 31429 admissions. Mean age was 70.7±5.7 (65-95) years. The most common cause of presentation was routine menapause follow-up. The other common causes were osteoporosis, breast problems, and incontinence respectively. Six hundred and fifty-seven patients (57.4%) were screened with Pap smear. No patient had abnormal histopathological results including precancerous lesions. Seven hundred and thirty-three patients (64%) underwent USG examination (64%) including 261 AUSG (35.6%) and 472 (64.4%) TVUSG. Endometrial hyperplasia was found in 49 patients, ovarian cancer in 4 and entometrium cancer in 5. Conclusion: We found that patients in the geriatric age group presented for gynecological examination much less commonly compared to the younger population and the most common reason for presentation was postmenopausal follow-up in this age group. No pathology was found in patients with only one Pap smear test or multiple Pap smears. © 2013 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
