Abstract

A & scaron;tata, a place name known from ancient Near Eastern sources, is located in the region of the Middle Euphrates. There is some debate about the location of A & scaron;tata, which is attested as both a city and a country. The borders of A & scaron;tata, the neighbour of Mitanni, are referred in the & Scaron;attivaza treaty between the Hittite and Mitanni states. However, the geographical situation of A & scaron;tata mentioned in the treaty reflects the period just before the Hittite hegemony, after the control of Mitanni. From cuneiform documents and archaeological data, it is understood that after the transition to Hittite dominance, the borders of A & scaron;tata changed.
