Özet
Compared to other age groups, giftedness practices (i.e., screening, identification, or education) in the early ages are less widespread and more heterogeneous; but, for accurate screening of giftedness, its traits in the early ages must be refined. Existing tools mostly integrate teacher observations and parental input in the process. Using a two-stage sequential mixed-methods design, we developed and tested a 23-item giftedness adjectives checklist. Among the parents of formally identified gifted children, the most frequently reported early adjectives were Retentive (98%) and Curious (97%) and the least reported was Precocious Reader (34%). Comparative findings showed that gifted students scored significantly higher than nongifted students on all adjectives except Energetic and Sensitive. The highest effect sizes for the differences were for Quick Learner, Complex, and Perfectionist, respectively. Findings are discussed in relation to literature and suggestions are provided.
