Introduction and Aim:
In today's contemporary society, smartphones are widely utilized for various purposes, including social media
engagement, gaming, and beyond traditional communication, thus becoming an indispensable part of everyday life for
many individuals. As a result, it has become increasingly crucial to identify the factors that contribute to excessive
internet use. In this research, we aimed to explore the predictive role of perceived leisure boredom and fear of missing
out in phubbing behavior.
Method:
The convenience sampling approach was used to choose 350 male (59%) and 310 female (41%), totaling 660
(Mage=20.692.73) university students for this correlational research. The study collected data using the "Fear of
Missing Out Scale-FoMO", "General Scale of Phubbing GSP", and "Leisure Boredom Scale-LBS". In addition to
descriptive statistics, MANOVA, ANOVA, and multiple linear regression analysis methods were utilized in the data
analysis after testing the basic assumptions of the parametric tests.
Findings:
The MANOVA analysis revealed that the main effect of gender on the "FoMO" and "GSP" sub-dimensions was
significant (p<0.01), but the main effect on the "LBS" sub-dimensions was not significant (p>0.05). It was discovered
that the mean scores of "FoMO", "GSP", and "LBS" differed statistically in terms of the main effect of engagement in
physical activity in leisure time (p<0.01). The mean scores of individuals who do not engage in physical exercise are
higher than those of the others in the sub-dimensions where there is a significant difference. The average scores of
the participants for "FoMO," "GSP," and "LBS" differ significantly depending on the variable of daily smartphone usage
time (p<0.01). Finally, based to the multiple linear regression analysis, boredom in leisure time and fear of missing out
account for 20% of the total variance in phubbing (R=0.44, R2=0.20, p<0.01).
Conclusion:
In general, the leisure boredom and the fear of missing out on advancements among university students enhance the
amount of phubbing. This study is believed to be significant since it is the first to establish the association between fear
of missing out, leisure boredom, and phubbing from the perspective of Türkiye. In future studies, it is essential to
explore the data obtained in this study with longitudinal and qualitative research to thoroughly analyze the reasons.
