Identification of Oomycetes species in apple nurseries in Isparta province, Turkey and determination of reactions of some apple rootstocks to aggressive species

Özet

Turkey is among the world's leading apple producers, with Isparta serving as the primary region for apple sapling cultivation. However, root and crown rot diseases caused by soilborne Oomycetes significantly threaten sapling health and orchard sustainability. This study aimed to identify the causal agents of these diseases in Isparta nurseries and evaluate the resistance levels of commonly used apple rootstocks against aggressive Oomycetes species. Between 2019 and 2022, field surveys were conducted across major apple sapling production areas in Isparta. Apple seedlings displaying symptoms such as damping-off, blackened root systems, and collar lesions were sampled. Morphological and molecular analyses identified several Oomycetes genera: Phytophthora cactorum , Phytopythium vexans , Phytopythium litorale, Pythium aphanidermatum and Globisporangium ultimum . Rootstock reaction tests were performed using rootstocks MM.106, MM.111, M.9, and Geneva series (G.41, G.210, G.213) against isolates of Phy. cactorum and Pp. vexans . Geneva rootstocks, particularly G.41, demonstrated the highest tolerance compared to Malling Merton rootstocks. To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate rootstock reactions against Phy. cactorum and Pp. vexans in Turkey and the first report of Pp. vexans, P. aphanidermatum, G. ultimum, and G. intermedium in apple-growing areas in Turkey. The findings underline the urgent need for integrated disease management strategies, especially the use of resistant rootstocks, to ensure sustainable apple sapling production in Turkey.
