Metadiscourse Use in Turkish Travel Vlogs: A Multimodal Perspective

Özet

Travel vlogs “function as word-of-mouth to stimulate travel intention of viewers” (Cheng, et al., 2020) as well as offering informative travel guides. Travel vloggers promote interpersonal communication by building relationship with their viewers to encourage interaction such as receiving likes, comments, view counts and having subscribers (Nyungen et al., 2023) through the use of linguistic and multimodal resources. To this end, this study aims at discovering how travel vloggers utilize metadiscourse to inform, persuade, and engage with their viewers. Considering the highly multimodal nature of travel vlogs (e.g., linguistic resources, gesture and gaze, objects in view, camera-angle and post-production tools), unveiling metadiscourse use in YouTube travel vlogs with a multimodal perspective is necessary to fully grasp how travel vloggers interact with their product and their viewers. To achieve its aims, Ädel’s (2010, 2023) taxonomies of metadiscourse are adopted as the theoretical frameworks of the current study and corpus linguistics methodologies are employed for data collection and analysis. Accordingly, A smaller set of the specialized multimodal corpus consisting of 12 selected YouTube travel vlogs in Turkish are analyzed with a corpus-assisted approach to identify the metadiscourse units and their functions according to all the categories in Ädel’s (2010, 2023) taxonomies. The findings of the study will enlarge the scope of Ädel’s (2010, 2023) taxonomy of metadiscourse by going beyond the academic genre and including new forms of personal metadiscourse and categorizing them with new discourse functions, as well as adding multimodal aspect dimension to it. Overall, the findings can serve as useful guidelines for Turkish travel vloggers who need assistance or who target more view counts and subscribers. In addition, it provides significant insights for contemporary Turkish used in online communication and thus learners of Turkish language can make use of the outcomes of the present study to keep up with the everchanging dynamics of online communication and employ them in both their personal and professional lives.
