In this study, a total of 45 layer chickens (ISA Brown) at age of 5 weeks were assigned one of three experimental groups: Control (n=5) and intravenous inoculation of EFAA-01 serotype of Enterococcus faecalis (Group I, n=20) and EFTD-07 serotype of Enterococcus faecalis (Group II, n=20) via V. ulnaris at 10(9) cfu (0.1 ml). After monitoring for 10 weeks, chickens were sacrificed by cervical dislocation for necropsy. Findings were evaluated clinically and macroscopically as well as under light- and electron-microscope. Amiloid deposition in joints of chickens in Group I was evident, but not in Group II. The results suggest that amiloid deposition in response to Enterococcus faecalis inoculation was serotype dependent.
