Özet

The aim of this study is to determine the role of interpersonal relationship styles, gender roles, social support and hopelessness in predicting the tendency to commit suicide in men and women. The sample of the study consists of 550 participants aged 18-60, and the data were collected by using Probability of Suicide Scale, Beck Hopelessness Scale, Bem Sex Role Inventory, Multi-dimensional Perceived Social Support Scale and Interpersonal Relationship Styles Scale. The analyses revealed that the effect of gender roles on suicide probability was significant along with interpersonal relationship styles and perceived social support. Having low income level, having inhibited relationship style but not using nurturing style, lack of (or insufficient) friend and family support, and hopelessness are found to be significant factors in increasing suicide probability in men. As for women, not using a gender-appropriate communication style (having inhibited relationship style), having low masculinity score, lack or friend support, and hopelessness seemed to increase the probability. The results of the study are instructive in determining the risk groups and developing intervention strategies for these individuals.
