Özet

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) uses the best evidence carefully, clearly and wisely in making decisions about the care of individual patients. It started in the early 1990s with the aim of implementing the best practices for patients by integrating evidence and patient specificities into the clinical decision-making process. In present day, the approach of opinion based decision has been replaced by one that prioritizes evidence instead, due to the instabilities and discrepancies between clinical applications and the difficulty of keeping up with the growing number of resources in medical literature that come out of the rapid progression of studies in medicine. EBMA involves formulating an appropriate question regarding the problem encountered, surveying literature to find the answer to the question, critically appraising the evidence, connecting the best evidence to the specificities of the patient in order to make and implement decisions, and an incremental approach that evaluates the process. It requires doctors to be able to survey the literature, to have knowledge in epidemiology and biostatistics, and to make decisions based on his/her experience as well as patient specificities. This text provides a brief overview of the definition of EBM, its history, the fundamental principles and stages of its application, the required skills to implement, the evidence pyramid and epidemiological research.
