Exploring the Factors Affecting Career Success: “My Career Success Story” Qualitative Technique Development Study
The aim of this study is to develop a semi-structured qualitative data collection tool to explore the factors affecting career success. The “My Career Success Story” qualitative technique mediates the participants' writing about the factors affecting their career success. “My Career Success Story” form consists of two basic stages. In the first stage, teachers are asked to think about their entire careers and identify important points in their career stories, while in the second stage, teachers are asked to explain in detail the factors that affected their career success in the areas they have determined. In the process of developing the “My Career Success Story” form, the basic structure of the form, instructions and response forms were first created. Expert opinion about the form was taken from two faculty members from the fields of psychological counseling and guidance and measurement and evaluation. According to the expert opinions, revisions were made. As a pilot study, the new form was given to be filled to two teachers, one of whom was studying at doctorate level and the other at master's level. In the first of the pilot applications, the form structure was explained to the teacher and the teacher's views and suggestions were emphasized, while in the second application, the teacher was not given any instructions and was asked to continue the process based on the existing instruction in the form. In both pilot applications, the participants stated that the form was understandable and emphasized that they carried out the answering process comfortably. After the expert opinion and the pilot application, the final version of the form was obtained and the form was ready for use. As a result of this work, it has been determined that factors such as commitment to the occupation, contribution to society, occupational expertise, goal setting, social support, perseverance, openness to learning and self-efficacy are effective on the career success of teachers.
