The reactivity, ignition behaviour and porous structure of the residual chars obtained from extraction of a bituminous coal were investigated. The porous structure of the samples was evaluated by CO2 adsorption. The ignition temperature of the original coal and residual chars in air were determined, and the relationship between these temperatures and the surface area was discussed. The samples were also gasified by CO2, and temperatures corresponding to a certain value of the reaction rate constant were compared with the ignition temperatures.
