Abstract

This study was performed to find out hair zinc, copper, magnesium levels, and zinc/copper, zinc/magnesium ratios of mothers with previous NTD babies from Turkey. A total of 27 mothers with previous NTD deliveries and 23 women with normal deliveries were included. Hair Zn, Cu and Mg levels of NTD and normal mothers were 131.39 +/- 5.19, 38.86 +/- 9.34, 48.53 +/- 7.11 and 185.10 +/- 9.35, 37.46 +/- 3.40, 67.21 +/- 8.28, respectively. The only significant difference exists at hair zinc levels (p < 0.001). Hair Zn/Cu and Zn/Mg ratios did not show any significant difference between the 2 groups.
