Optimization of the phenol adsorption onto HDTMA-bentonite was carried out. HDTMA-bentonite was synthesized by placing quaternary ammonium surfactant (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide) on Cankiri sodium bentonite (CNa-B) having cation exchange capacity 85 meq/100 g clay.A 2(4) full factorial central composite experimental design followed by multi-stage Monte-Carlo optimization was used in the design of experiments and in the analysis results. This procedure limited the number of actual experiments performed while allowing for possible interactions between the four parameters. The parameters were temperature, agitation rate, the amount of organobentonite and initial phenol concentration. The optimum values for the tested variables in selected ranges for the maximum adsorption of phenol onto HDTMA-bentonite were 20 degrees C, 150 rpm, 3 g, 4000 mg/L respectively.
