24 patients who have been treated by using Nd:YAG laser and TUR for their primary superficial bladder tumor between march 1992 and october 1993, were given intravesically high and low doses of IFN-alfa 2a aiming in preventing recurrences. 12 patients in the high dose group received 99 MU and 12 patients in the low dose group received 27 MU IFN-alfa 2a. During the follow-up controls, 2 (16.6%) out of 12 in the high dose group have been observed to have recurrence, and the number of patients showing recurrence in the low dose group was 4 (33.3%). The difference between the monthly recurrence indexes, 100 month recurrence rates and average recurrence intervals of both of the groups were significant. Flu-like symptoms that have been reported to be noticed during intravesical IFN-alfa 2a treatment and increased in connection with the applied dose, were not observed. Such findings as submucosal inflamatory infiltration and chronic cystitis obtained from random bladder biopsies taken during the follow-up controls were considered to be the indications of direct cytocidal effect of the medicine as well as its effect through immune system. © 1996 by Gustav Fischer Verlag.
