Data on a possible association between hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and Behcet's disease are controversial. So far, there has been no prospective study examining this frequency of HCV infection by using both anti-HCV and HCV-RNA determinations in Behcet's disease. The aim of this prospective study was to asses the frequency of HCV infection in a large cohort of patients with Behcet's disease. Seventy-nine patients with Behcet's disease were included in the study. HCV infection was diagnosed by both anti-HCV and HCV- RNA determinations. Frequency of HCV infection was found to be 12.6% in patients with Behcet's disease and this ratio is significantly higher than that seen in healthy controls (nearly 1%) reported in previous studies in Turkey. In the light of these findings, further studies are needed to evaluate the possible link between HCV infection and Behcet's disease.
