Özet

Objective: Essential oils are mixtures, which are obtained from natural sources and induce some physiological effects in the body. These effects vary due to the chemical content of the essential oil. Therefore, selection of essential oils to be used is extremely important in order to see the expected effect. It is not always possible to obtain accurate information about the source and quality of essential oils sold in the market. Essential oils with known chemical content or pharmacopoeial quality are preferred as therapeutic agents in phytotherapy and aromatherapy. These oils are effectively used in mental and physical disorders such as headache, pain, insomnia, eczema, stress-induced anxiety, depression and indigestion. Material and Method: In the content of current study, pharmacopoeia analyses of a total of 51 essential oils of 16 brands sold in the market, which comprise 11 lavender essential oil, 8 rosemary essential oil, 10 lemon essential oil, 8 peppermint essential oil, 9 bergamot essential oil and 6 basil essential oil samples, were conducted. Analysis conditions were determined in accordance with the monographs of Turkish Pharmacopoeia (2017) for lavender, rosemary, peppermint and lemon essential oils; French Pharmacopoeia for bergamot essential oil (1991), and AFNOR French Standards for basil essential oil. Results for basil were also compared with reference values in Randriamiorisoa, 1995 (Manuel Rapide Et Utile Pour Producteurs D'Huiles Essentielles). Result and Discussion: In the light of the data obtained as a result of the pharmacopeia analyses conducted with the samples obtained from the market; it was observed that 3 of the lavender essential oil samples and 1 of the rosemary essential oil samples possess full compliance with the pharmacopoeia, while the other essential oil samples did not fully meet the desired specifications. The results of the pharmacopoeia analysis of the essential oil samples revealed that many oils on the market do not meet the standards of pharmacopoeia.
