Four hundred forty seven consecutive hydatid cyst cases were studied. The patients' ages ranged from 7 to 73 yr (average 34.4). There were 286 women (63.9%) and 158 men (36.1%). The localization of the hydatid cyst in the various organs was: liver 70.3%; lung 11.9%; peritoneum 9%; spleen 3.2%; retroperitoneum 1.4%; abdominal wall 1.6%; and muscle 1%. In the diagnosis of liver hydatid cyst, abdominal film was a useful examination in about 79.5%. Casoni and Weinberg test and eosinophilia were not reliable diagnostic procedures. 4% of liver hydatid cyst cases were operated on a diagnosis of obstructive jaundice. Anaphylactic shock was observed in 5 cases (1.1%) during hospitalization. Aspiration biopsies were done erroneously in 8 hydatid cyst cases for tumoral diagnosis. In 13.5% of cases suppuration was encountered. Suppuration was not seen in peritoneal hydatid cysts. During operations some organs were removed unnecessarily (5%) and other organs injured as a complication (2.5%). 2.8% of cases were considered inoperable. The rate of recurrence was 22.7%. The operative mortality rate was 10.7%.
