The practice of prenatal diagnosis in chromosomal abnormalities has been used for nearly 40 years. Although Down syndrome is the most common indication, the implications of prenatal diagnosis are still expanding. The focus now, is to get more accurate, less expensive, and at the same time, less harmful methods for the mother and the fetus. It is rather critical in prenatal diagnostic procedures to obtain the results and to make the decision as quick as possible. In prenatal diagnosis the fundamental aim is not to terminate pregnancy but to evaluate the condition of the fetus correctly and helping the family to make their own decisions in their personal, social and ethical context. This review is an evaluation of prenatal diagnostic methods from the above-mentioned points of view. Copyright © 2006 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
