A transmission electron microscope study of epsilon and alpha' type martensite formation has been carried out in an Fe-14%Mn alloy. The interaction mechanism of the two martensitic structures was examined and the crystallographic parameters of transformation were determined by means of electron diffraction techniques. Despite the formation of epsilon martensite in as-quenched austenitic samples, alpha' martensite was found only under applied plastic deformations at low transformation temperatures. The effects of transformation temperature and the level of plastic deformation on the formation of epsilon and deformation induced alpha' martensites were also investigated and the volume fractions of the epsilon and alpha' martensite were observed to be associated with the presence of dislocation tangles in the austenite matrix.
