Özet

© 2014 by Türkiye Klinikleri. Objective: To the best of our knowledge, there are no studies in the literature on alterations in taste sensation after nasal surgery, except for an early postoperative questionnaire done on patients with nasal polyposis undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). The aim of this study is to investigate early and late taste alterations after nasal surgery in adults. Material and Methods: Sixty-eight patients who underwent nasal septoplasty or ESS between 2005 and 2007 were included in the study. Whole mouth gustatory test was applied to all patients preoperatively, at postoperative 1st week (early) and 6th month (late). Four different taste samples were used to determine taste thresholds. Postoperative taste thresholds were compared to preoperative ones. Results: First (in the early term), there was an increase and then (in the late term), a significant decrease in the taste thresholds for all taste samples, except citric acid in ESS patients at postoperative period. However, there was no significant change in the taste thresholds for any of the four taste samples after septoplasty. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that ESS has a negative influence on taste early after surgery, but this resolves in the late postoperative period. Septoplasty has no significant effect on taste sensation. We believe that this study will give a different point of view to clinicians and researchers in the scope of taste alterations after nasal surgery.
