Özet

The General Assembly of the World Medical Association (WMA) convened in Porto, Portugal, on 7–11 October 2025. During the meeting, in which numerous policy statements were reviewed and new ones adopted, the most noteworthy development was the WMA’s approval of a resolution—submitted by the Turkish Medical Association (TMA)—calling on the Government of Israel to comply with the Geneva Conventions and the norms of international humanitarian law. The resolution, drafted in response to the Israeli army’s systematic attacks over the past two years against health workers, health institutions, and medical infrastructure in Gaza, explicitly identified the responsible party and urged the Government of Israel to act in accordance with international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions. That the Turkish Medical Association submitted the sole motion on this issue, and that the World Medical Association adopted it unanimously while explicitly invoking the responsibility of the Government of Israel, represents a significant and historic development. This article presents the decisions adopted at the WMA General Assembly and outlines the debates on Gaza, which were central to the meeting’s agenda.
