Özet

The aim of this work was to assess of some animal welfare measures during animal transportation to slaughterhouse of Ankara Commodity Exchange. The data were obtained from 3719 cattle and 17896 lambs from August to October in 2006. Mean floor space allowance (m(2)/100 kg) in lorries for cattle was determined as 0.242 m(2), while it was calculated as 0.291 and 0.267 and 0.269 m(2) by using FAWC equation, Randall equation and EU Regulation (1/2005/EC), respectively. The differences between determined and calculated means for floor space allowance during cattle transportation were significant (p<0.001). Mean floor space allowance (m(2)/100 kg) in lorries for lambs was observed as 0.437 m(2), although it was calculated as 0.610, 0.602, 0.727 and 0.608 m(2) by using FAWC equation, Randall equation, Buchenauer equation and EU Regulation (1/2005/EC). The differences between determined and calculated means for floor space allowance during lambs transportation were also significant (p<0.001). Average period and distance of travel were observed as 1.85 hours and 92.33 km for cattle, and 1.91 hours and 74.05 km for lambs respectively. The slope of ramp for unloading was determined as 9 degree. In conclusion, stocking density was generally high, but some of animal welfare measures such as travel period, travel distance, slope of ramp and transport separately by the gender were convenient during animal transportation.
