Abstract

This paper provides a structured review of topology optimization applications in the automotive industry, drawing on published academic studies and reported industrial practices. Increasingly stringent environmental regulations, together with the transition toward electric mobility, have transformed vehicle mass reduction into a primary engineering concern. Conventional design methodologies often rely on conservative safety margins, which may lead to material-intensive structural solutions. Topology optimization offers a systematic framework for redistributing material in accordance with dominant load-transfer paths, potentially improving structural efficiency. Representative applications involving chassis, brackets, suspension components, and battery support structures are examined. The reviewed studies generally report weight reductions in the range of 20–30%, while maintaining acceptable structural performance. In addition, recent developments in AI-assisted generative design are discussed, as they appear to support faster exploration of multi-objective design spaces and improved design productivity.
