This study has been carried out in order to examine the relationship between mothers' characteristics regarding gender roles and their children's toy preferences and play types. In accordance with this aim, it has been evaluated what kinds of toy preferences and play types of girl and boy children's whose mothers having feminine, masculine and androgynous characteristics. In the context of this explanatory sequential design study; the descriptive survey method, which is one of the quantitative research methods, has been used in the determining the characteristics of mothers regarding gender roles and the phenomenology design which is one of the qualitative research methods, has been used in examining the toy preference of children in the study. A total of thirty children, fifteen girls and fifteen boys, who have been selected from an equal number of the children of feminine, masculine and androgynous mothers have been incorporated in the study group. "Bem Sex Role Inventory" by Dokmen (1999) has been used in the determination of mothers' characteristics regarding gender role in the study. In the process of collecting data about toy preferences of children, the children are asked to draw picture of the toy which the children play most with at home and in the classroom. In this direction, individual interviews have been made with the children by using structured interview method. The descriptive analysis has been applied in analysis of collected data. The findings of the study have shown that toy preferences of children of feminine and mascule mothers concentrated on a group of specific toys differently from androgen mothers' children. It is determined that the girls of feminine mothers mostly play with house toys and the boys of masculine mothers mostly play with active/movable plays. Apart from that, the conclusion is while the children of feminine mothers mostly play with role plays, the children of masculine mothers mostly play with active/movable plays and then competitive plays, the children of androgynous mothers play different plays, such as role plays, active/movable plays and construction-building plays without focusing on a specific play types. Based on these points, it is recommended that parents and teachers should be highly attentive to the children bring together diverse play materials and quality play environment and within this process adapt to equitable approach rather than stereotypical approach.
